McCarthy

McCarthy

McCarthy lies at the foot of the Wrangell Mountains of Alaska which copper, not gold, lured the first pioneers in the late 1800’s. It was a hunting ground for the Native Athabaskans until the copper rush sprouted. The construction of the Northwestern Railroad was set in motion to bring copper from Kennicott and McCarthy to Cordova, Alaska. Everything revolved around the mining operations and McCarthy, a once “dry town” established homes for their miners, saloons, restaurants and pool halls. Visitors today can tour the ruins of Kennicott, explore the rail bed of the old Copper River and trek the scenic beauty of Alaska’s Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.

Valdez

Valdez

Valdez is known as the "Switzerland of Alaska," a tribute to the splendid snow-capped mountains that surround this prosperous port. Once the gateway to the gold country, Valdez is now the southern terminus of the famous Alaskan Pipeline that carries "black gold" from the Arctic Ocean to an oil-thirsty world.
