Cruise Theme: Art in Tahiti

Hosted by Hawai'i and the South Pacific’s pre-eminent artist, Kim McDonald, who, according to a friend, "Eats, sleeps and breathes the tropics, and then somehow magically transforms her experience into art". It's true; whether paddle boarding in Maui, outrigger canoeing, diving for pearls, or journeying up jungle trails to Tahiti’s breathtaking waterfalls, she revels in the lush beauty and excitement of the islands — both as an acute observer and enthusiastic participant. Perhaps that is why her works resonate so deeply. Because she doesn't just paint what she sees, she paints what she knows.

Kim has spent decades exploring: the uncanny light and shadows, the liquid moon, the impossibly lush colors and fragrances, the rich, strange music of the surf and the reef, the exhilaration of being an active part of it all--Kim knows her islands. And she has created a gift of them, through her art, just for us. Kim will be joining the m/s Paul Gauguin, providing fellow enthusiasts with a fascinating multimedia exploration of Paul Gaugin’s artistic love affair with Tahiti, and 120 years later, her own. Part history, part art theory, part poetry, Kim’s talk will explore the unparalleled allure of the islands—and the artistic challenge involved in evoking that beauty on canvas. (For a lucky few, you will be invited to join Kim at her artist table to continue the conversation!)

Paul Gauguin Cruises: m/s Paul Gauguin
Designed specifically to glide in luxury through the shallow seas of the South Pacific, The Gauguin is a small-ship cruiser’s dream. She delivers travelers to intimate ports inaccessible to larger cruise ships, all the while providing a travel experience that is nothing short of luxurious. Once on board, guests enjoy newly-decorated spacious suites and staterooms (more than 70% with private balconies), an onboard watersports marina, three dining venues, an extensive spa, and five-star service. Life on The Gauguin also reflects the beauty and rich cultural heritage of the islands she calls upon, with a warm, friendly feel, informal setting, and even a beloved troupe of Les Gauguin and Les Gauguines—local Tahitians who serve as onboard hosts and hostesses, entertainers, and storytellers.
Ship Highlights
  • The m/s Paul Gauguin offers a top-rated, all-inclusive luxury cruise in the South Pacific, featuring fine dining, 24-hour room service, complimentary Wi-Fi, entertainment, and exceptional service with a 1:1.5 crew-to-guest ratio.
  • Guests enjoy spacious oceanview staterooms with European linens and daily replenished beverages. Nearly 70% of the staterooms have private balconies.
  • The cruise includes watersports from an onboard marina, snorkeling equipment, optional SCUBA diving programs, and an enrichment program with local naturalists and experts.
  • Longer port stays and overnight calls in Bora Bora, Moorea, and Papeete allow for deeper immersion into island life, visiting intimate ports not typically accessed by other cruise lines or resorts.
  • The Moana Explorer Program offers educational activities for children, while the cruise maintains eco-friendly operations, supports local communities, and offers spa and beauty services.

Shipboard Policies
  • Medical Emergencies
A licensed and registered doctor and nurse are on board and available for professional and emergency services, which are available at customary charges. The ship's medical center is designed to provide medical care for certain temporary illnesses and accidents, and is not intended or capable of providing ongoing treatment of pre-existing medical conditions.

  • Smoking Policy
For the comfort, convenience, and safety of all guests, smoking is prohibited in any enclosed dining venue and is permitted only in specifically designated outdoor smoking areas. These include the forward outdoor areas on Deck 5 (starboard and port sides), La Palette (outside area, starboard side only), and the Bar Du Soleil (starboard side only). Cigar smoking is permitted only at La Palette. Smoking is prohibited in staterooms, suites, and private balconies, and pipe smoking is not allowed anywhere on board.

Smoking Safety Notice: Guests MUST always use ashtrays provided in the designated smoking areas and never throw cigarettes overboard as they could be blown back into the ship and cause a fire.

  • Special Dietary Needs - Advance Notice Required
Guests requiring a special diet, or special food items aboard the ship, must notify the Reservations Department at least eight weeks prior to their sailing date. This is particularly important if specially purchased food items are required. After boarding, please contact the Maitre d' to discuss any requirements. General dietary needs such as low-salt or low-cholesterol foods can be satisfied on board the ship simply by speaking with the dining wait staff.

  • Wheelchair Access & Special Needs
For guests requiring oxygen equipment, an oxygen concentrator is the only form of oxygen equipment allowed aboard ship and must be provided by the guest. PGC wheelchairs on board are for emergency purposes only. Guests requiring a wheelchair for mobility must provide their own.
  • Pregnancy Policy
Pregnant women should consult with their doctor prior to sailing with Paul Gauguin Cruises, as there is no prenatal care on board. Paul Gauguin Cruises will not accept any guest six months (24 weeks) or more into pregnancy at the time of sailing due to the lack of neonatal care facilities on board. Pregnant guests under six months (24 weeks) must provide a doctor’s written permission prior to sailing that states she is fit to travel by sea and air (if Paul Gauguin Cruises booked their air). This must be faxed to Reservations, Attn: Special Requests-Medical at 1(425)732-7198. The fax must reference the Guest’s name, ship name, and sailing date. The permission must be dated within 30 days of the cruise departure date. The Master in conjunction with the Ship’s Doctor has the right to deny boarding if in his professional opinion there may not be adequate shoreside medical facilities available in port during their cruise.

  • Currency
The U.S. Dollar is the standard currency aboard The Gauguin, and you may exchange dollars for small denominations of local currency* at the reception desk. For your convenience at the time of embarkation, Paul Gauguin Cruises will request a confidential registration of an accepted credit card. The night prior to your final disembarkation from the ship, a detailed statement of your shipboard charges for onboard services and products will be delivered to your suite or stateroom. All such charges must be paid in full by cash or accepted credit card (Visa®, Mastercard®, or American Express®).

*Guests will NOT be able to exchange dollars for local currency for the following countries:

    • Fiji: Fijian dollar
    • Vanuatu: Vanuatu vatu

  • Electrical
The standard electrical voltage aboard ship is 220 volts. Both 220-volt and 110-volt outlets are available in bathrooms and staterooms.
